Anonymous Mirror Portraits

(c.1950)

This page consists of a number of photos I recently found at a flea market in New York City. All of the photos are self-portraits taken using a mirror by an unidentified woman sometime in the late 1940s/early 1950s. Most of the photos are small contact prints she most likely printed herself which I've enlarged for your viewing pleasure.

WARNING!! In some of the photos the woman is topless so if partial nudity makes you uncomfortable please don't scroll down.

I find these topless photos particularly interesting- Here's a woman probably in her late 40s or early 50s who seems entirely comfortable taking nude photos of herself- that they were taken in the 1950s makes them even more extraordinary. I'm guessing the photos were taken over the course of a year or so- while clearly several different cameras were in use she doesn't appear to age too drastically.
